Stripes and Strings: A Festive Weekend

By edanNov 13, 20240

The excitement bubbled within me as I arrived at Reading Festival in 2016 with my best friend, David McCleary. We had been planning this adventure for months, drawn by the promise of the electrifying lineup headlined by Foals, Disclosure, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Biffy Clyro, and Fall Out Boy.

The heat of the August bank holiday sun wrapped around us as we approached the festival grounds. The sensation of the sun on my face conflicted amusingly with a drizzle of rain that would greet us later. Though we hadn't camped, staying instead at a hilariously dilapidated one-star hotel, we were ready to immerse ourselves in the festival spirit. I sported yellow and orange painted stripes across my face, a blue bandanna atop my head, and swung an inflatable electric guitar as we got into the rhythm of the festival, sipping beers and cider, waiting for the big acts.

Maxïmo Park's performance was a highlight. Having been a fan since their early days, my anticipation was at its peak. The ambiance was electric, and the enigmatic presence of their frontman was captivating. The music reverberated through us, a wall of sound complemented by the enthusiasm of the crowd. Each beat and lyric transported me back to younger days when their songs were an ever-present soundtrack.

Even the unexpected shower couldn't dampen our spirits. David, ever practical, donned his anorak, while I basked in the rain, refusing to let it chase us indoors. In the breaks between musical acts, we attempted some comedy, but Russell Howard’s routine, usually sharp and witty, fell flat live. It was a mild blip in an otherwise joyous experience.

Despite our hotel’s questionable standards, nothing could take away the exuberance of the weekend. We laughed, we sang, and we promised ourselves another year of fun in the sun, thrilling to the beats and bands that united us in the celebration of life through music.
